3epkano – Selected Tracks

3epkano art

3epkano is an eight piece band from Ireland that does cinematic / soundtrack pieces. It’s a nice break from the standard postrock – this is post rock with a more mature, intelligent sound, post rock the way only the Irish could do it. 3epkano is definitely unique, incorporating violin, cello, and other instruments among the standard fare of guitar, bass and drums. They offer eight tracks on their website, for a whopping total of an hour and fifteen minutes worth of music. Each track tells its own story, each one has its own personality – this one sedate and thoughtful, that one a bit rowdy, and of all of them, the track Faust stands out the most. Starting out quiet and introspective it cuts loose near the end with a noisy rock composition that moves your body as well as your mind. 3epkano gets 5 stars in my book.

Shaaaaaark!!!

Its a shark!

Its a shark!

So today my family and I are down at the beach. I and my wife are sitting in our chairs, or back and forth in the surf with the kids. At one point, a life guard comes riding down the beach on an atv, whistle blowing, waving everyone out of the water. ‘What is it?’ I wonder. I see a handful of park rangers coming down to the beach, so I walked up to one of them and asked what was going on, thinking she would say something like jellyfish or rip current. Nope. It wasn’t either one of those. She told me someone spotted what may have been a fin up north of us.

Now I’m thinking ‘Come ON!’. I figured someone probably has been watching shark week on Discovery Channel, got a little over excited at an oddly shaped wave, and let their imagination run wild. So I sit back down in my chair. Now, my chair is about four feet away from the edge of the water. And right in front of us, in ankle deep water, appeared a six foot black tip shark! I’m talking ankle deep water. It just thrashed its way right up onto the sand, chilled for about three seconds, then thrashed its way back into the hellish depths from whence it came.

To say we were startled is a tad bit of an understatement. Needless to say, we were done playing in the water for the day. Possibly for the rest of our lives.

bahgheera – Black Outside, Black Inside (Incident On Rama 3)

I’ve been all alone here on Rama 3 now for about four weeks.

I don’t know where everyone went, how they left, or why. Just gone, leaving me here – alone? Only minimal life support systems are up, nothing else. Lighting, above all else, is the one system that I have begun to crave. The only light I have left is my flashlight, and batteries are running low. I haven’t explored my crewmates cabins yet, seems wrong to open the door to someone elses quarters. Especially not knowing what I’ll find on the other side. But maybe there are batteries there. Or clues to what happened. Maybe thats what I’m avoiding.

Aside from that, all the logs are updated and nothing is out of place, yet here I am, isolated, hundreds of thousands of miles from anything.

No communications are working – I can’t raise any other outpost, ship, or Earth. I have no way of sending word, no way of receiving information about what may be happening outside…

Oh yes, outside. The noises started six days ago. First, banging. Knocking and banging all over the outside hull, especially near the airlocks. Who – or what – is it? Then came other noises – possibly powered craft of some type, but who is controlling it? Today the banging is so hard that I can actually feel the floor give just a little bit. If it gets any harder, the station will leave orbit… I don’t want to think about that.

I’m waiting for someone to come back, someone to explain to me just what is going on. Because I didn’t sign up for this. I didn’t sign up to live the last few days of my life in sheer terror. Terrified of simply not knowing what is out there – what is possibly trying to get in here. I have enough supplies and oxygen to make it another few weeks, after that I don’t know what I’ll do. Although I have a pretty good idea… I promised myself I wouldn’t think of that until I absolutely have to, though.

Mikael Fyrek – A Thousand Years and One

Mikael Fyrek - A Thousand Years And OneFrom the Kahvi Collective, probably the most prolific outlet of quality artists on the internet for the last decade, comes Mikael Fyrek with his icy set of five tracks. Captivating, glitched drums and thoughtful melodies are the centerpiece of this release. Ambient sounds are integrated with long drawn out themes, funky bass sounds supporting it all. This is one of the best from Kahvi yet.
