Tokyo Dawn, it LIVES!!!

Ok, first some background info. Waaay back in the day, when I first started really getting into music (meaning I suddenly realized there was more to music than Megadeth and commercial rock, lol), I stumbled across this new thing on the net called ‘net-labels’. The very first one I found was called Tokyo Dawn Records, and there was such a huge library of great tracks, I thought it would take forever to exhaust it all. Then one day Tokyo Dawn disappeared, leaving behind a simple page stating that Tokyo Dawn would return soon, brand new music, etc. etc. The website stayed that way for at least five years, I’d check it a couple times a year to see if it had come back and it hadn’t. I don’t know how long it’s been since the last time I checked, but now I get a server not responding error so Tokyo Dawn Records is officially gone.

Now, I just stumbled across possibly the greatest find yet. An ftp server on scene.org that has a catalog of Tokyo Dawn files from the late 90’s. The files are in mod .xm format, so make sure your player knows how to deal with them. (Winamp does just fine.) Mods are what we kids had back in the days before mp3, heh heh.

So without further adieu – Tokyo Dawn ftp site.

Control – Data Flow

Control EPControl offers eight tracks of rolling ambient melodies washing over tight dnb drumlines. Think Hearts Of Space with a drum’n’bass flair. While the album overall could do with a bit more variation here and there, it is a completely enjoyable experience that I look forward to again and again.

Hermelin

HermelinHermelin brings us 53 minutes of outstanding postrock, comparable to Milhaven and Explosions In The Sky. Starting out with a Nine-Inch-Nails-esque noise track, we suddenly break into an all over the place guitar riff that introduces a track that completely grabs your attention until it dissolves back into noise at the end of the track. The rest of the album follows suit – droning and pulsing guitar riffs with a touch of wah pedal here and there, piercing powerful melodies and gentle rolling variations. This is the best album I’ve found in months, be sure to give Hermelin a listen.

ATTENTION: REAL PEOPLE!!

Ok, it’s ridiculous the amount of spam that comes in from the comment section on this site. There are thousands and thousands of them, I don’t have the time to weed through and find out which are legit comments and which aren’t. 99% of the comments here on the orbit are for Viagra or other medications. So – here’s what I’d like. If you are a legitimate visitor of this blog, please leave a comment. I’d like to know what kind of traffic I’m getting but the ev0l spammers are messing it all up for me. 🙁

Thanks a lot!!

EDIT: I finally went through the user list and purged all the fake accounts, especially if the email address ended in mail.ru. So if you are a legitimate user and got deleted (I deleted about 200 accounts) please sign up again and leave a comment! Thanks.

John Wesley – Shiver and other albums

ShiverJohn Wesley is the guitarist and background vocalist for the band Porcupine Tree. On his website, he’s offered five studio albums and a live session for download. Lots of melodic rock, almost folk rock, with a pop flair. Great music for filling up your ipod. If you dig Johns stuff, please donate a little something to him for his time.

The Nature Of Light – Shores Of Jupiter

Cover artFrom the artist:

Seemingly familiar, the shores beckon and beg to meet you again…
How many times before have you been on these beaches?
Perhaps this is your first visit, or perhaps this is your life cycle…
A circle, ongoing…the shores have no end, and they wait…endlessly for your return…
Our time has come around once more…and I have waited a lifetime for you…
In these moments, I sit and smile at a rather striking concept…
The sounds heard here have been heard before, and as always, will be heard again my dear…
In this life, and the next, as the ones before and after…I will wait, on these sandy beaches…
My hand out, heart open and eyes closed…for you…my love, my lover, my Jupiter…

Lunar – Wall Of Sound

Lunar Wall Of Sound coverRemember Lunar? Another stunning release has been issued forth from the brain of Lunar. His last release, Hybrid Awaken, was top notch and the follow up is only better in every way. Wall Of Sound has everything – ethnic instruments blended with electronic beats and synths, staccato rhythms and minimal basslines mix it up with orchestral strings, piano and electric guitar. This release is such a melting pot of different styles but it still boils down to one style and that style is simply Lunar.

Altus – The Elements

Altus - The ElementsFire, Water, Earth and Air. The four elements, as described by Altus’ excellent electronic compositions. There are four cd’s worth of material in thirty two tracks here, so get ready for a long listen. Moving atmospheric synths, piano, and orchestral instruments detail various aspects of the natural world, and take you inside each element. Almost minimal in composition, but very moving. Includes printable artwork for each cd.

Visual Acoustics

Here’s an interesting toy to play with: a visual interface for creating music. Purely an improv tool, Visual Acoustics gives you several ‘brushes’ to paint a canvas with. Each brush is associated with a different instrument, such as strings, guitar, piano, stand up bass, and others.

I found that the strings and flute sound really great to start out with. This should hold your attention for at least a few minutes, anyway.
