I recently had the experience of hiking through the mountains alongside the Columbia River in Wallula Gap, Washington. I saw the river from the vantage point at the top of a cliffed mountain, which I estimate is around 400 feet high. It’s a difficult hike – the gravel-strewn trail is steep and it’s fairly easy to climb up, while difficult to climb back down. Once you get to the top, the terrain is mostly flat and offers a large area to walk around. From there you can see the river as it curves around the opposite mountain range. Cargo trains can be seen on both sides of the river, and they run in both directions. Just about a half mile down the road is the Twin Sisters Monument. The Gap is one of the most picturesque locations I’ve been able to visit.

Here are some photos of what I saw that day. I try not to edit in black and white for the most part, because I feel like it’s cheating in a way, but this location really looks amazing in black and white.
