Today I spent some time at Battery Hill in Fort Fisher. From the hill you can see the State Ports up north in Wilmington, to the west is Southport across the river with Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant visible, and south you can see “The Rocks”, a project from the late 1860s to protect the shipping channel in the Cape Fear River from shoaling. The Rocks is essentially a barrier wall, like a jetty, that stretches from Battery Island to Zeke’s Island.
I walked from the hill across The Rocks almost all the way to Zeke’s Island, but had to turn back – what remains of the 150 year old wall is treacherous at points. But I got some good shots from the areas I was able to access. There were many people around – hiking the rocks, or fishing, or just chilling out under an umbrella.
